Complex family dynamics

Family relationships play a powerful role in shaping who we are—they influence our self-esteem, mental health, and how we connect with others outside the family.

For some, family dynamics come with added layers of complexity. Families formed through adoption, those with members of different racial or ethnic backgrounds, or families navigating chronic illness, for example, can bring unique challenges to how we see ourselves, our sense of belonging, and our feelings of responsibility toward others. These experiences can deeply impact our emotional well-being and relationships.

Why treatment is important

Early experiences of loss, trauma, unresolved conflicts, or feeling like you don’t belong can leave lasting marks on your emotional and psychological well-being. These challenges can be compounded by persistent feelings of guilt, shame, or resentment, as well as patterns of control, neglect, or dependency in relationships. For adoptees, these struggles can feel even more intense—research shows that adoptees are four times more likely to attempt suicide than those who are not adopted. If you’re carrying these burdens, know that you don’t have to face them alone. Healing is possible, and it begins with understanding, compassion, and support.
